Radon Gas

I was flipping through a book on hydrogeology, when I came across the subject of radon gas. You may remember Radon, Rn, from chemistry class, or from when you bought a house and someone mentioned the silent killer. I always thought it was a hyped up scare. Like black mold or termites… Turns out that Radon, a radioactive noble gas that forms from the decay as shown in the diagram, is the 2nd most common cause of lung cancer in America after smoking, and kills 20,000 people a year. A county-by-county map on the Texas Department of State Health Services website shows very low radon levels in the North Texas though. I guess my ignorance was understandable.
